What refrigerator design says about the food we eat
Our refrigerator has been on the fritz recently, and last week our landlord replaced it. The new fridge is great -- the only problem is that an entire section of our new refrigerator is devoted to soda cans. I live with three other guys, and none of us drink pop (or in their cases, they don't buy it for home consumption and don't drink it very often). So we have this weirdly shaped section of the door that often sits empty. We've started to stuff it with fruit, but it's designed so specifically to soda cans that it doesn't work very well.
Funny how a fridge reflects and may even influence how you eat. I wonder what mass-market refrigerators would look like if everyone only ate real food. What features would be different? I've often thawed out various cuts of meat from the farm, leaving blood in parts of the fridge. Might be nice to have a thawing tray with a little drain. Or maybe a larger bin for vegetables.
What features would you add to your ideal fridge?

my fridge is a 8'x8' walkin
my fridge is a 8'x8' walkin that i can stack boxes of fruit/veggies and hang meat from hooks in the ceiling. this is only run during summer months when the root cellar is too warm to store anything and the smokehouse is not being run. all dairy products come fresh as needed from a small creamery 2 miles away. all items are bartered and no cash is exchanged. have exchanged jellies and jams for almost everything required daily.
I think that is amazing!
I think that is amazing! Where is this place located ? I have always dreamed of living in such a community or something very similar. NYC is a far cry from what you have described.

I have a soda dispenser too, but luckily it is a wire basket under a shelf. It is used as my cheese and lemon/lime holder instead. After living here for 8 yrs, I forgot all about the fact I had one until you mentioned it...lol. Maybe cloth mesh bags on hooks and you could hang veggies and fruits in the bags on the wire rack.....especially long veggies like celery.....<shrug>

Buy some paracord from an army surplus store and weave a mesh netting around the metal bars that are currently there. That may be good for a grape dispensary. Then buy some more paracord, as you cannot have enough.
The bottom drawers of most
The bottom drawers of most fridges are ok for fitting a few venison quarters in, but there's no place to stuff a decent sized goose, let alone a turkey. I don't know what the hell you do with that can holder. Perhaps you could make sausages of just the right length to stack up neatly like cans.
Or perhaps rig some sort of
Or perhaps rig some sort of cross member and hang sausage LINKS in their very own protective cage?

Love the comment! Awesome
Love the comment! Awesome idea. More generally about fridge design, I would love to have more bins. I want somewhere to keep fruit and veggies. The lower bins are always too full.
Total agreement about the
Total agreement about the veggies. maybe larger bins with a lining made from that plastic that's supposed to make veggies last longer. I't's depressing to plan dinner and find the veg has turned to compost . A much larger dairy compartment. The one in my fridge is a total joke. About the turkey- so true, movable racks would be so nice
