Tom Sawyer workout of the day: Beer

I've written about Tom Sawyer workouts -- when you're given a chore and you turn it into an opportunity.  Like helping a friend move apartments is actually an opportunity for a great workout.

Today my Tom Sawyer workout was carrying 14 cases of St. Peter's gluten-free beer up 6 flights of stairs.

In CrossFit notation that would be:

  • 7 rounds for time of:
  • 2 cases of sorghum beer
  • up 6 flights of stairs

What an awesome, functional workout.  You've got some weight, you get high intensity by sprinting up the stairs as much as you can (critical), you do intervals by resting on the way back down, you accomplish a concrete goal, and it doesn't take very long -- 20 minutes and I'm done for the next couple days.  But you can't lollygag it -- doing it hard and fast is essential if you want to send a strong signal to your body to adapt.

What's crazy is that I could have had people help me carry the beer.  But I decided not to call them because I wanted the full workout.  So it's really come full circle...from a chore that you don't even want help out on, to something that you want to do all yourself.  The only difference is your attitude.  Will work(out) for beer.

The sorghum beer was donated by St. Peter's Brewery in England for tomorrow's Robb Wolf release party.

John,    You truly are the lead cave man for getting beer up those 6 flights. I almost passed out just getting me up those stairs. The final result was well worth the effort, I must admit.

It was good to have you and

It was good to have you and your wife, Terry!

Finally just tried some of the St. Peter's sorghum beer for the first time today.  Not bad at all...  It's really nice to have kinder, gentler beer options available.  Good on ya for carrying those cases, their bottles are quite heavy!  ;-)  Cheers!

Yeah, it ain't bad at all.

Yeah, it ain't bad at all. Clean, crisp, mild ale taste.

It also didn't hurt that you

It also didn't hurt that you had a mission, a purpose for the greater good. That beer MUST get upstairs! :^)

well, if you ever come by the east coast, be sure to swing by and I'm sure we'll have something going on

John, that attitude is

John, that attitude is definitely a great way to turn a necessary chore into a fun challenge. I found myself standing at the bottom of 425 steps near a waterfall this past weekend. I decided to time myself and see how fast I could make it to the top. The confused stairs of from all of the people resting on benches half-way up were priceless.
