A few years ago, I was your typical office-worker: stressed out, uneven energy, overweight, and inconsistent complexion. Now I'm just your typical 28-year old urban hunter-gatherer on a quest to be healthy, and having a few adventures along the way. See my full bio.
From Roseanne Barr to Jennifer Aniston in 30 days (How NOT to take "Before and After" photos)
If you're starting the Paleo Challenge, tonight you have a task: take photos and measurements. It doesn't take long, but makes a HUGE difference. It will motivate you, and you will hate yourself if you make big improvements but don't have "the proof".
First, let's look at how NOT to do it. You've seen BS "Before and After" photos before -- where the changes look impossible? Yeah, well it's possible...with a little clever photography. I call it The Roseanne Aniston Method -- from Roseanne Barr to Jennifer Aniston in 30 days. Here's how to do it.
Before (Roseanne Barr)
- Take the photo in dim lighting
- Don't smile, look grumpy (like you just screamed at Dan), and have poor posture
- Get an 80's haircut
- Wear awesomely ugly clothes, and layer them on
After (Jennifer Aniston)
- Take the photo in good lighting (bonus points for taking it from a different angle)
- Smile, look happy, and have confident posture!
- Get a good haircut
- Wear fashionable clothes
If you follow all these rules, you'll have a SmartWater endorsement in 30 days or less, guaranteed. OR YOUR MONEY BACK!!!
The Roseanne Aniston Method
Before After

Note: if you're already fit, then take the "After" photo FIRST, then eat poorly and do nothing for 30 days, then take the "Before" photo SECOND...easy! If all else fails, learn how to use photoshop -- a great way to touch up your self-image.
Touch up your self-image with Photoshop!

Okay, let's get real. Measurements are really important, so here's how to start.
Take Photos
This is an excerpt from Robb Wolf's excellent book, The Paleo Solution:
- Take photos in the same clothing. Make the clothing formfitting where appropriate. Nonexistant clothing is even better.
- Get front, side, and back photos.
- Get a close-up of your face, both frontal and profile.
- Update photos weekly and make sure to label them with the date if your camera does not automatically do this.
- Stand in the same place when taking the photos.
Here's an example of good photos.
Weight / Body Fat
I don't weight myself often (I don't own a scale anymore), but you should weigh yourself. Keep in mind that it's possible to lose weight by losing muscle and lean body mass (BAD), and to stay steady or gain weight by putting on muscle and lean body mass (GOOD). Body fat percentage is a more honest measure of body composition.
Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR)
- Measure the narrowest part of your waist
- Measure the widest part of your hips
- Divide waist by hip, and you've got your WHR
Men, shoot for 0.9, women shoot for 0.7.
Okay, that's it. You can get blood work done too, but that takes a lot more advance planning and knowledge. Now go take those photos!

To go a step further, measure
To go a step further, measure all your potential mates' waist to hips ratio as well... 0.7 in women is a sign of increased fertility;)

Too bad that I don't have anything to actually measure that all with. This calls for photos.

I took before photos in
I took before photos in April of last year (2010) when I had just transitioned into legitimate CrossFit - after the intro month- and after I had made the move to Paleo. I then took them again in July and then somehow not again until last month, December. My body has noticeably changed overall for the better but it has also been some further tweaking within Paleo "constraints" that has helped me lean out that extra bit. I am stunned when I see the photos as my brain would never have perceived what my eyes can now SEE in the pictures. I highly recommend photos for everyone, sometimes measurements are not even enough- mine haven't changed super drastically since apparently the spots i'm measuring are a bit more stable than the overall body comp change shows visibly.I took my photos in the most hideous 2-piece speedo swim suit I own. I don't know why, but I figured if you could see the change for the better in that, well, it had to be real and not just the suit itself changing to be more flattering... it's pretty ugly though.Rock on modern hunter-gatherers!Diane @ Balanced Bites
Well aren't those pics
Well aren't those pics interesting....and the numbers. Maybe this really is big ;) Had a great and satisfying day food wise and a long walk...about all I can manage some days. No dairy (except butter) no grains , no legumes no sugar. Very happy.

All right. I 'm doing the challenge so I may as well do the pictures. Interestingly, I'm getting a blood test tomorrow. Perhaps a sign I'm meant to do this? It's for an ongoing health issue, I'm hoping going cavewoman will help. Of course it's not the whole panel just testing a few specific items, but I am thinking that I will ask my doctor to request a full blood panel. It's exciting to be able to see the change along more body processes than just weight.
A lot of people see
A lot of people see beneficial results beyond weight. In fact, for many people weight isn't even the primary reason. For me, it was mood / energy level, as well as improved complexion.
As for tests, get your LDL particle size (helps you interpret cholesterol levels). Get your Vitamin D levels checked. There are many more...
I did this diet in an even
I did this diet in an even more restricting way for almost a year. I cut out fruit as well because I've been suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome for 3 years and I think it's connected to a yeast overgrowth (candidaisis) After doing this diet I noticed my LDL levels went up. What do you mean LDL particle size? My vitamin D levels are normal, but low.My waist to hip ration was 0.76. So that's good! I definitely feel better in general when I don't eat sugar, dairy or high carbs. What vegetables are not allowed? Is butternut squash okay? parsnips? carrots? I haven't been eating those, just curious!
I have a bunch of stuff about
I have a bunch of stuff about cholesterol and healthy high fat diets at www.bulletproofexecutive.com and (for parents, especially pregnant ones or those hoping to be) at www.betterbabybook.com. Just got an offer from a publisher in NYC on the book! However, there is a ton of info about your questions specifically at http://www.westonaprice.org/blogs/why-is-my-cholesterol-so-high-on-this-...
