Locality and decision-making

I have increasing distrust for decision-making as the unit gets further away from the individual and family.

Individual - Drink as much soda pop as you like or ban it from your own diet, I don't care.

Family - I have no problem with parental authority to ban soda pop for their children. Some families do, some don't, others restrict it in various ways -- either way, it's not a big deal.

City - Of any level of government, I have the most tolerance for local, city-level decisions. I can live with individual cities deciding whether they want to welcome fast food restaurants or not -- and many already do.

StateWould strongly oppose a soda pop size restriction.

Nation - Don't tell me what I can or can't put into my body.

United Nations - Can you imagine the UN trying to ban the size of soda pop? Laughable.

The city -- or city-state -- is actually the best place for experimentation with rule systems. Just look at Hong Kong or Singapore.  I'm looking forward to more free cities when they get off the ground in Honduras. The city-state is where most of the innovation should take place, because they're easy to leave if people don't like the rules.

What ought to our site look

What ought to our site look likeEdit: I have checked exactly how additional launched websites seem like and I really do not such as the appear associated with a number of them. A lot of vibrant colours or a lot of small facts are really annoying. I personally like the present "scetchy" look -- maybe it's possible to embrace it from "notebook scetchy" to "white/blackboard scetchy".Modify: This is exactly what We designed a minute back, utilizing my blackboard:I tried to make use of ladder operators but they did not look nice.As i believe that bra-s or even ket-s (much better ket-s) should be used for tags, don't they?Since you mention upvote and downvote control keys, it might be nice if we could in some way tie them into the raising and lowering providers. The actual chart paper without anyone's knowledge I could do without, obviously, and I don't think parentheses are enough in order to visually distinguish the actual tags, as well as I would like the actual upvote and downvote control keys to become a a bit more colorful, and it wouldn't be which poor to have a few faint colours to highlight a few of the regions in the correct sidebar. It's probably my personal favorite of all the SE website styles. My personal main criticism is the fact that it is a small too blue for my taste; I favor to have only a tad more selection in the colour scheme.I personally love this look. The thing is that I have been about refined websites for so long they glaze over my personal head. Taking a look at this site is just a view with regard to sore eyes. Let me tell you the reason why. As somebody who dabbles within style I believe which smooth, advanced design is overrated. Simpleness isn't.Right now that which you have is simply an unpretentious page which the content moves away. It is like a empty sheet of paper waiting to be investigated. Waiting around to be created upon. There's nothing presently there however pure nothingness. ;)If you've observed the look with regard to Cyberpunk|News it looks therefore simple at the start, however the fact is it works a function it acts as a hurdle against the 4Chan/Digg group as there is absolutely nothing presently there on the site, but the content material by itself. No movies. No dressup. Absolutely no "social features". Just the content material. So what can become more beautiful than that?In my experience that's the highest possible form of design. Paul Graham has modified it so that it actually encourages the participation of their audience as well as acts as a resistant against the gremlins. What could be more stunning than that?So make sure you maintain our site like this. Actually, if you're able to take away the nifty design methods that you have included in it. Simply make an empty piece of paper and we, the city, is going to do the rest.

1st PostHi every person, My

1st PostHi every person, My name is Kelly Wayment, I have been involved with Charter Schools for over five years, both as a parent of students as well as on the board of directors of a school in Salt Lake City Utah. This website is for just about anyone who would like to share advice with regards to charter schools, regardless of whether you be a parent, teacher, or simply a concerned citizen. Remember Charter Schools are publicly funded schools so they have an effect on everybody, not only these attending them. Please post your comments here. ThanksKellyFETHULLAH GULEN COMMUNITYBrief background on Gulen and his motion. Gulen, a Turkish Imam and founder of an international organization with all the professed goal of starting interfaith dialog in between Muslims, Christians, Jews, and Hindus. He was indicted for in search of to establish an Islamic state in Turkey, this was in violation of their constitution. He now resides in Pennsylvania and lives within a walled compound with 50+ followers who act as his body guards. He is called Hoecfendi by his followers, this signifies Lord Master. He professes to become a moderate Suffi Muslim, but there's evidence that he together with many of his followers are Sunni. and be granted a green card. There have been two ex CIA agents who testified on his behalf. After a lengthy court battle which he won,he now features a green card. All of this for any man who has pretty much no formal education. He is credited with starting a motion which spans the globe, and who's followers quantity in the millions. He is seen as a moderate alternative for the radicalism which is discovered in a number of of the world's Islamic groups. However there can be individuals that see one other side, one which seeks to establish Sharia law, and reincarnate the Ottoman Empire, and in many cases amongst other Muslims he is not at all times viewed positively. Inside the Usa you will find among 90-100 schools with the most becoming located in Texas. Are public charter schools, so they may be becoming funded by tax dollars. A large number of are affiliated with regional Colleges and Universities. They tend to supply a superior education than the community public schools and give services that are not out there elsewhere. These consist of Turkish language instruction and cultural experiences by means of clubs. They also provide subsidized trips to Turkey and possibilities to visit Turkey and be an exchange student. Michael Rubin with the American Enterprise Institute argues that so-called members dominate the Turkish police and divisions inside the interior ministry. Beneath the stewardship of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, one particular of Gulen most prominent sympathizers, tens of 1000s of other Gulen supporters have entered the Turkish bureaucracy. has had incredibly superior good results in, that of getting followers turn into influential members of government. By performing so some assert that he has been able to turn the governments orientation from western to eastern. Whereas Turkey was an ardent supporter with the United states and our allies they may be increasingly much more sympathetic in the direction of countries just like Iran and Syria. He has a large number of followers and sympathizers in and out of Turkey. Interfaith Dialog groups planet wide preach moderation and peace involving the various faiths. Gulen has met with a lot of influential religious leaders throughout the entire world. They do this via having different neighborhood functions, these include things like Ramadan dinners, Noah's pudding gatherings, as well as other Turkish Cultural occasions. 1 huge factor that they do is usually to sponsor trips to Turkey, these will commonly comprise of other nations also such as Germany, Holland and France. All of these are run by volunteers, who're followers of Gulen. With regard for the trips, households will support by either feeding the participants, delivering them having a place to keep, or subsidizing the trip its self. This tends to make it attainable to give trips at unbelievably low prices, some occasions in the going rate. By doing this, furthermore, it gives them an opportunity to promote their culture, religion and agenda. Gulen also runs newspapers, television stations, and some banks. Its pretty fluid and one can find not any concrete ties among the numerous groups, however they can be tied with each other via a widespread target and commitment. In researching this group, even when the numerous organizations said that they weren't connected, I found that people from one school or community organization will be book mates with other folksWhen I 1st became a charter school parent, I was seeking only at school quality and hadn't thought at all concerning the usually accepted philosophy of how charter schools are supposed to become held accountable. I discovered later that the principal accountability is supposed to come from parents, not the charter school boards, which only produce minimal oversight. The idea appears to become that school selection must be like purchasing; when you are no longer pleased using the solution, you quit "buying". This sounds especially appealing to a lot of people. I'd prefer to raise a few factors for discussion, although. There is a big difference between ordinary consumer shopping, and generating selections regarding our children's lives and education. Altering schools is challenging on a youngster. They lose their network of friends, and they've to adjust to a new program. Study after study has shown that continuity and consistency support kids, and that being aspect of a neighborhood is vitally valuable for them. Putting parents within a position exactly where their only leverage more than a school is to take away their child seems like a mechanism to encourage continuous disruption in children's lives. Also, thinking about how the typical parent may perhaps currently be operating highly tricky, to place an further burden on them of school oversight seems unreasonable. It appears naive to feel that if something is wrong about a school that parents will notice it immediately or have access to sufficient info to evaluate it correctly. This really is true even for your most involved, concerned parents. Also, even if hordes of enraged parents quit a school right after some outrageous incident, it appears that right after a year or so, a new crop of parents comes along, entirely oblivious to what turned off all their predecessors (yes, this honestly takes place). Imagine a tourist business enterprise - year immediately after year, consumers is usually cheated, and there will usually be even more coming along. As for your thought that parents will disseminate information and facts to each and every other, once more it sounds great in theory, but in practice it looks as though on the net school rating forums are dominated by disgruntled people with an agenda, or school personnel masquerading as parents and writing propaganda. Strong http://www.trianglemortgagelenders.com/index.php?option=com_blog&view=comments&pid=381676&Itemid=8, practical details on a school is exceptionally tricky to discover. To sum up, I feel that the model of charter school oversight coming mainly from parents rather than a charter board is flawed and must be reconsidered. The following article was sent to me, and is known as a translation from German. But that will modify, if points go the way of Turkish preacher Fethullah G 68-year-old has taught for 30 years that Muslims should accept modern techniques, educate themselves, and simultaneously remain pious. His followers operate a large number of tutoring institutes, schools and universities worldwide. In Germany too, Fethullah G is getting more and much more followers. Parents of Turkish origin send their children to what's by now 150 tutoring institutes and 12 schools run from the G movement. Meanwhile, the tutoring facilities is often located in nearly each and every main city. Inside the Spandau borough of Berlin, schools run by the supporting organization T belong to the network. They enlisted the cooperation with the German Orient Foundation, Abraham Geiger College plus the Evangelical Academy as partners. The system stated that the G movement was to become subjected to a "scientific study". Unfortunately, in spite of this, the meeting turned into a purely celebratory occasion. Much could possibly be heard about G dedication to "world peace" as well as the "Dialogue of Civilizations," about the value of his philosophy for your integration from the community Muslims, and about how essential it truly is for contemporary western society which, although technically adept, suffers from moral neglect. Scarcely any critical voices were present around the podium; the only critical concerns from the audience came from journalists. "Of program I am not a critic with the G movement, otherwise I would not be right here presently," said Dutch theologian Pim Valkenberg, who compared Fethullah G for the humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam. It's not only in Turkey that Fethullah G is regarded using a mixture of fascination and suspicion. G who comes from East Anatolia, produced his name as an imam inside the 1960s by way of his preaching. Inside the mid-1990s a great number of Turkish politicians and intellectuals praised him as a modernizer of Islam, given that he advocated a union of religion and science. Nature, in G view, is the Book of Allah, which as a scientist a single must learn to read. Science and contemporary engineering are for him not the enemies of Islam, but rather sources of religious revelation. G has met with leaders of other religions, such as Pope John Paul II. The army and judiciary in Turkey have constantly regarded G with suspicion, and felt their suspicions confirmed within the late 1990s, whenever a recording of a speech surfaced in which G termed on his followers to engage within a kind of on institutions, with the target of seizing the strength of the state. Patiently, and without open conflict using the secular establishment, pious Muslims should certainly function to obtain crucial positions, said G accordingly. Prosecutors viewed this speech as a contact to revolution. G maintained that he didn't want a Muslim theocracy, but that instead, parts of his speech had been deliberately cut up so as to foment this impression. G fled towards the United states, from exactly where he continues to lead his motion. It contains not only schools but additionally trade associations and also the Turkish Globe Media Group, with the religiously conservative high-quality newspaper "Zaman" amongst other individuals. Turks who are not Fethullaci seem to fear speaking out against this man and this motion. Why are they afraid? To my know-how Gulen's name is just not pointed out within the charter schools in our location, but right after undertaking a superb deal of research into the founders, teachers and administrators a hyperlink to Gulen is clear. When it appears far fethed, the man has been at it for 40 years and has schools and universities around the globe where his teachers preach to their kids, generally without having their parents figuring out it.) Gulen's site says you will discover a lot more than 800, other papers say more than a thousand. And they are opening new ones all of the time. The students are encouraged to attend weekend classes, as well as summer season camps, exactly where teachers continue to teach them Gulen's views. (After forty years, a few of these teachers likely had parents who had been followers.)Charter schools are exempt from quite a bit from the red tape that ordinary public schools have, in particular in regards to hiring and firing. However they still get state and federal tax dollars to operate the school. If you need to steal cash from the school's spending budget to utilize for the Movement's advantage, you need to be able to decide methods to devote the cash. Even though they employ US teachers, the essential positions of principal, vice principals, the board memberships plus the like - exactly where people make a decision how to devote the school's money - are all held by Turks, or the Turks are permanent members on the boards. (Someone mentioned they have fine schools, however the Texas State Board of Education questioned the Harmony Science Academy's they run there about "excessive erasures" on the standardized test types they turned in one year.)And do not sell them short. They invest a lot of income cultivating neighborhood politicans and law enforcement individuals. Gulen's non-profits (there is in most cases one that is certainly the sponsor with the school)hold annual dinners exactly where they hand out awards to FBI agents, state Senators and Congressmen. Hell, they even had former Secretary of State Madeline Albright as the guest speaker in the opening of a mosque they constructed in Texas. When the Chief Prosecuter attempted to press his case, saying he was going to charge GUlen with amended charges, he was generally fired.Like Allthefacts, we're web site publishers which can be devoted to exposing the ongoing corruption, immigration law violations, and also a multitude of other crimes being perpetrated by Turkish nationals running American charter schools. Despite their attempt at transparency, these guys are absolutely connected to Gulen and are his followers -- doing all the things that he "requires" them to complete to steal from our government below the guise of "quality and option education."Our government has allowed this to come about for over ten years and this insidious force continues to grow, exceeding 120 schools to date, with no end in sight. It's our responsibility as citizen and parents to actively perform at exposing these guys plus the crimes that they continue to commit. Like the old saying goes, "It's normally the quiet ones it is advisable to be worried about." Effectively, Gulen has a whole army of silent puppets prepared to conspire and act accordingly -- and none of their actions are what they "appear" to become. The report states that the State Charter Board has revoked its charter determined by its economic state. It has been alleged that this school is connected for the Fethullah Gulen Organization Air Jordan 13(XIII), and there has been a whole lot of scrutiny provided to it more than the last year and a half. Dear Mr. Gulen, maybe we should certainly confiscate your quran or audit your teaching curriculum that involves: Turkish language, dance, song as well as your campuses even have a Turkish American Club. This is sad, rather sad. Dear Mr. There's also an excellent documentary about Sibel called "Kill the Messenger" it speaks about Turkey promoting nuclear components to Pakistan by means of an American-Turkish firm named Giza Technologies. No conspiracy theories just the truth from Sibel. (EIN 262674420) which also operates five charter schools in Florida. charter schools (over one hundred) run by followers in the Gulen Movement.  John, I love the idea of the city-state or free city being the leader in innovation and change. Living here in Macau I find that decisions are often based on the immediate concerns of the citizen base. Alongside that I watch news out of Hong Kong, and the ruling body there has its finger on the pulse of the people; there is too much money involved not to. In contrast to the positive impact of small city-state authority, from my western perspective I find some decisions to be short sighted, especially when it comes to the expansion of the city and my sepcific neighborhood. Overall I am so please that strange and small seeming chats about what people drink is not a relevant or politically charged issue here. I am feeling very confortable with the live and let live socio-political system here.  Best Wishes!

If you haven't already, you should read Neal Stephenson's book "The Diamond Age" - I think you'd like his version of the future...

Your the only libertarian

Your the only libertarian I know that isn't completely upset over this.    And what is so funny to me is that we are no where near New York City--or a Blue state for that matter--and this soda ban story is all over the place.  I heard people discussing this before Mass yesterday.   I think it is the whole idea of any government (local, city, state, nation,) trying to impose any law on an individual's diet that is upsetting my libertarian friends and boyfriend so much.  It is the encroaching nanny state argument.  Personally, I am not living in fear about government overreach, especially over this law, but I know people who think any law such as this at any level is reason enough for immediate concern. ( What's next?) I don't understand the whole premise of it.  If the whole idea of the ban is to limit peoples' sugar intake, then I don't think banning one thing such as the Big Gulp will help matters much.  Let's face it.  There are plenty of things you can eat and drink out there that eventually will bring about obesity, not just huge soda cups.  So I really think the whole ban is kind of silly and unnecessary.  Besides that I've been known to fill those big cups up with water and unsweetened iced-tea.  I live in the South; it is HOT!  And I know most people fill it up with soda; but unless they are forcing it down someone else's throat, there is really nothing any government can do about it.  They can ban a cup size, but it won't limit sugar intake.  That is pretty impossible to regulate.  I think it would be more reasonable to put the energy into other avenues.  I made the decision to stop drinking sodas about five years ago due to an article I read about calcium depletion in women, not some type of media war on sugar, salt, and whatever.....

I absolutely agree 100%.  We

I absolutely agree 100%.  We are headed back to the Progressive temprence movement only this time it is demon Coca-Cola.  I don't drink the stuff myself but so tired of the nanny-state overreach.

Not so easy to pick up and

Not so easy to pick up and move when you are married, have kids in school, a house, community relationships and responsibilities, etc. Just sayin'. Also, my job skills are not very portable.  I wish they would all stay out of it. All of it. Kid comes to school with a bruise - teacher MUST report it to social services. Why should I be fined for not wearing a seat belt? Why am I fined by my HOA for not cutting my grass? Fat kids taken away from parents by social services. Social engineering is ALWAYS a bad idea.
