How to eat paleo when you get your wisdom teeth out
My buddy just got his wisdom teeth out and is begging for suggestions. His ideas:
- A lot of chicken and beef broth
- Some vegetable baby food
- Lots of pureed vegetables
I'd add:
- Coconut milk
- Coconut milk plus almond butter, dark chocolate
- Grass-fed butter
- Various pureed soups (gazpacho, etc.)
- Mark Sisson's Primal Fuel (high protein, high fat from coconut)
- The inimitable Sardine Smoothie
Hell, I don't see anything wrong with blending up any given paleo-friendly meal. Ground beef and a little tomato sauce. Chicken breast with some lemons and herbs. Steak with a little red wine reduction.
What would you add to the list?

Just got mine out yesterday.
Just got mine out yesterday. I ate applesauce and kale/banana "ice cream". Just froze the banana then put the kale and banana into the food processor. It was hard to eat at all on the first day. Really looking forward to eating breakfast in a few hours (woke up from pain and am now browsing Internet for ideas). Second day I'm allowed to eat soft foods with the front of my mouth so I'll be having my usual (eggs with avocado), just scrambling the eggs in coconut oil and I'll have to mash the avocado up this time. Also, planning to make mashed sweet potatoes, and considering slow cooking chicken until it's so soft it is practically mush. Starving! The ground beef with tomato sauce hurts to even think about. Anything top sweet or acidic has been aggravating the sockets where my teeth were.

You could always just do a native spirit quest. Stay inside a circle without food or water until you have a vision.

For my part, I'd recommend coconut milk smoothies, scrambled eggs, and lots of warm (not hot) soup and tea. The warmth is wonderfully soothing on your sore jaw.My friend, however, was demanding steak, burgers, and my dad's burros (kind of like a large burrito- ground beef and spicy) within hours. On the other hand, he was completely high for at least 24 hours and spent the night entertaining us with his ability to pull surgical gloves over his face and blow them up like balloons using only his nose. Your milage may vary...

I was eating yummy steak the night of having my wisdom teeth out with no problems and they had to cut the bottom two out. I was awake there was blood splashing on the dentist's mask I was medicated. good times.Quit whining and eat some meat.
Just need to add dry socket
Just need to add dry socket is caused by negative pressure or suction so no straws ,spiting or smoking, they didn't say don't chew and if they give pain drugs , pain shouldn't prevent chewing
Definitely good suggestions
Definitely good suggestions here, but make sure the food isn't too hot or it could soften or dissolve the clots protecting the sockets. Dry sockets hurt, and the treatment (clove oil-soaked gauze packed in) tastes terrible.

Some mashed parsnips (or good ol' potatoes if he's in decent metabolic shape) with irish butter would be the comfort food he might need after having some teeth pulled out of his skull.

Drugs. Lots and lots of drugs. For a week, maybe 10 days. I think the guy who did mine advised Olivier for "Marathon Man".

What a challenging and
What a challenging and essential question! Your response is great and inspired me to offer these additions/variations:Use eggs - stand alone, in vegetable dishes - they can be gummed even when hard cooked.Slow cook sweet potatoes and fruits of choice - the fruit juices will release and when pureed, the resulting mixture is richly textured, and spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, pumpkin pie spice blends, etc make it taste like pumpkin or sweet potatoe pie.Can also do this with any starch and fruits/veg of choice - resulting pureed mixture can be eaten hot or cold with fat and seasoning added for best palatability and highest soothing effect on oral tissues - some like cold and other feel better with warm dishes.Use summer squash as a high water content veg. base in dishes.Use a slow cooker/crock pot to tenderize everything/make high nutrient soups, stews and mechanical soft (that's the therapeutic dietary term) dishesIf eating dairy, consider homemade yogurt for the high whey and quality protein - mix with frozen fruit (blueberries and melon pieces work expecially well)to soothe inflamed oral tissues. (I drain the whey from a portion of each batch and use it in dishes to up the protein content)Use nut butters in dishes to get protein and calorie counts up while adding taste/texture.I hope he feels better soon and gets some welcome relief from the discomfort!

I know this is an old comment but I just had my wisdom teeth out and found this post doing a web search, as I'm struggling to eat. Anyhow, thanks for the idea of adding nut butters! I was trying to think of a way to get my protein (yesterday was all fruit/veggies). I'll be adding sunflower seed spread to my fruit/veggie "ice cream smoothies" today.
Great advice, thanks!

Second on the scrambled eggs,
Second on the scrambled eggs, a must. Avocado based smoothies are good...veggie or fruit based. You can also do raw egg smoothie....an egg nog version with nutmeg is always delish. Sweet potatoes, pate.....But likely it will only be soft stuff for a day or two. I don't recall having much if any major food changes when I had them out, same with the hubby.
